Carol Leonard
Science

Carol J.Leonard Lemon Bays Marine Science teacher is here at Lemon Bay yet another year to help students understand science and anatomy. Leonard grew up in Massachusetts in a semi rural community. Her family had a strong community service tradition and loved the environment. She spent many vacations as a girl in the wilderness and camped all around New England.

Leonard attended the University of Massachusetts and the University of Rhode Island to get both of her degrees. She also has National Certification from the Nation Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Leonard decided to become a teacher because "during my freshman biology lab, my professor asked me to help him teach the lab next semester, and he was impressed with my strong grades and sharing personality." At first Leonard sought to teach algebra but decided on biology. "I have taught all levels of biology here at LBHS, and I now teach marine science and anatomy."

Leonard wanted to teach science at a higher level rather than at an elementary school. "I still go back to the basics with my students, but I can go more into detail at a high school level."

Leonard has many things she likes about teaching marine science. She likes the fact that it is an interdisciplinary course with a wealth of topics, and it has many relevant examples to people's lives. "We are inextricably interconnected to the ocean."

Leonard enjoys teaching though when she does have spare time, there are many other things she enjoys. Leonard loves to read and to travel to new places. Leonard volunteers on the Board of Directors of the Coastal Wildlife Club, which supports the local sea turtle patrol. "Doing that takes most of my "free" time up, but I take pleasure in doing it."

There are many things to learn in high school, and Leonard does a great job teaching, and the students and staff here at Lemon Bay are proud to have her back to help educate students yet another year.
